Letter from the President

Denver was great! This was the second MTNA National Convention I have attended and by far the best! Also attending from NFMTA were Robin Engleman, Renee Holliman and Rae Hao. With 2000 people attending, I hope I didn't miss any one!

This year's focus was Group Teaching but there was plenty for the more traditional independent teacher, too. Recreational Music Making or RMM (targeting adults and baby boomers for group lessons) received a lot of attention. For those of you who keep your back dated American Music Teacher publications, check out the October/November 2005 for the article on "Keyboard Pedagogy and the Future" which makes the Mind-Body-Spirit connection associated with RMM to discover some of the reasons you should consider RMM in you studio.

For those who could not attend, MTNA has available all the sessions on tape for a fee.

By far, the highlights were the master class and recital by Lang Lang, the 25 year old Chinese sensation! Check him out on You Tube. He is a showman which, some argue, can distract from the music...but close your eyes and the argument is mute! I have never heard so many different colors from a pianist. His pianissimos and tone are unique.

Next year, the MTNA National Convention is being hosted right here in Atlanta! Make your plans now to not miss this incredible opportunity!

Fall Festival 2008

You can now put NFMTA Fall Festival 2008 on your calendars! Fall Festival is confirmed for Saturday, October 11, 2008 at Northview High School. This is a little earlier in the fall than in past years. It means that we will need to begin on Festival music a little earlier with our students, but it also means we will have more time after Festival to prepare for Celebrate With Music, normally held the first weekend in December. Fall Festival is a judged event that is open to students of all ages and levels. The competitive aspect is de-emphasized and judges are instructed to be positive and encouraging with their written comments. As such, it is a perfect first-time festival opportunity for young students! This year, in addition to performance awards, each judge will be giving a special award for best performance of a Classical Period piece.

Festival Guidelines and forms are already posted on our website (www.nfmta.com) in the next few weeks. The Guidelines and forms will also be provided in our Handbook at the first meeting in August, and explained at that meeting. The deadline to register your students is the date of the September meeting. Festival 2008 Co-Chairs are Sharleen Mancini, Jenny Sutton and Paula Wamsley.
