Message from the President
Welcome Back! I hope everyone had a good summer and is ready to get back to work. This year marks North Fulton Music Teachers Association's 10th Anniversary and we plan to celebrate it accordingly! More on that later...

This time last year, I challenged us all to become better teachers through various means. This year, I continue that challenge and up the ante by asking you to seriously consider serving NFMTA.

Thank you to Rhonda Freeman for taking over Celebrate with Music! Rhonda is an inspiration and a great role model for us all. She only became an active member last spring and is already jumping in with both feet! We really appreciate you, Rhonda, as well as all of those who have stepped up to the plate in the last 12 months!

By contrast, we have several members who have been active in the chapter for years, but who have never felt comfortable serving as committee chairs or assisting. Please consider serving. Maria Kransmo, our President-elect, will soon be contacting many of you as she begins to build a strong board and committee chairs for 2008-2010! I encourage you to step out of your comfort zones to serve. You will be glad if you do...it is immeasurably gratifying to serve and know you have given back to the group.

Did you attend the GMTA conference last year? If not, this is the year to make it! This year it is in our own backyard, in Dahlonega. We will provide several $50 stipends to help alleviate the cost of attending, but you must be present at the meetings to be eligible.

In March of 2008, I will travel to Denver to attend the MTNA Conference and hope to bring back many good ideas for furthering NFMTA's goals.

On a sad note, we mourn the passing of Keith Sills, a talented teacher, who passed away from pneumonia while working in Spain this summer. He will be missed. What a poignant reminder of how fragile our lives are and that we must live our lives to the fullest while we are here together.

Gratefully,

Lori Bennett Hamrick

Fall Festival

This year the NFMTA-sponsored Fall Festival will be held Saturday, October 27, 2007 at Northview High School. The Festival is a noncompetitive one-day event that is open to all students of NFMTA members, regardless of age or playing level. Last year we had a very successful Festival with over 300 students participating! The goal of our Festival is to provide to students a non-competitive performing experience, with encouraging and constructive comments from the judge. It can be a great self-esteem builder and first-time festival experience for young students. While non-competitive, each judge may select outstanding performers to receive small cash "scholarship" awards.

Students are required to play two pieces from memory, as well as scale and cadence for each piece and a brief sight-reading example, all level-appropriate (level chosen by the teacher). The competition is open to pianists, singers and other instrumentalists. The student fee is $16.

To encourage performance of standard repertoire, each judge will award a special Prize for best performance of a Baroque Period piece.

Placement

If you are in need of students, please contact Debbie Dickensheets at dickensheets@comcast.net. Include the following information:

  • Your geographic area and neighborhood
  • What ages and levels of students you seek
  • What performance opportunities in which your students participate such as Fall Festival, Local Audition, Celebrate with Music, ABRSM, Piano Guild, Federation, etc.
  • Your educational background

Please let me know if you would like to be referred as a teacher.

If you were on the list last year and still need students let me know that also so I can keep sending referrals. Last year most inquiries were for piano teachers. That does not have to be the case if other teachers are interested in participating.

I expect to get the highest volume of inquiries right after school begins.

Please give my name and email to potential students you cannot accommodate. That's where most of our student referrals are coming from--other teachers within our organization.
