Message from the President
Welcome back to a new and exciting teaching year! It is with great pleasure and
excitement that I take over the presidency from Lori Bennett Hamrick. We have a
great foundation to build upon thanks to Lori and the past board, and I hope
that for my two years of tenure the organization will grow even stronger and
more active. Our VP of programs, Fred Hsiang has been busy trying to put
together an exciting and educational program for us all. Please come join us at
the meetings as often as you can and share your praise and concerns with me. I
am really good at remembering faces, but a little slower with names so please
excuse me if I can't remember your name on the spot.
While you have been enjoying your summer, your board has been busy setting the
budget, planning for the year as well as for the future. We would love to have
a greater participation among the members, taking on such responsibilities as
committee chair for one of our events, and you could be the ONE that we are
looking for. Like any other organization, we are only as strong as our
membership commitment.
This is our 10th year Anniversary! Lori and I, as well as our wonderful
committee members have been busy planning for our celebratory CONCERT! Your
help and participation is both needed and expected. The concert will take place
the 20th of September at Johns Creek Baptist Church on McGinnis Ferry Road. We
ask that you help sell tickets to the event, as well as promote it and come out
and listen to your fellow teachers perform. The evening will be one to
remember, and will help establish our work and involvement in the community. We
all know why music is SO IMPORTANT to enhance and shape the life of us, our
students and our parents, and in the overall health of where we live and
work. We contribute so much without the acknowledgment and I would like to
change that. Music is as important as any of the often publicized sport events
and we need to build public awareness of what great things a music education
will do for ANYONE! Ticket prices are $10 adult/$5 student and a reception will
follow the concert.

Phillip Kawin Master Class
We are excited to share this wonderful Master Class event with three other
local music teachers groups. Please consider recommending your gifted student
to this wonderful opportunity (see attached .pdf file). A short bio follows,
and more is available on the Manhattan School of Music's
faculty information.
Phillip Kawin has developed a highly individual pedagogical approach that has
established him as a much sought-after artist teacher. His concepts and
insights have evolved through an eclectic background of training that combines
a variety of artistic and aesthetic influences. Kawin has created a teaching
methodology that elucidates the principles of pianistic technique and
musicianship in a detailed, analytical approach--an approach which does not
ignore the intuitive aspect of music-making.
Phillip Kawin has given performances internationally in Australia, China,
Italy, Russia, Spain, Korea, and in such U.S. states as Arizona, Connecticut,
California, Texas, Missouri, and New York. In New York City, his appearances
include a scholarship benefit concert for Manhattan School of Music's
Preparatory Division and a performance of Rachmaninov's Suite for Two Pianos at
Merkin Concert Hall.
Internationally, Phillip Kawin is frequently in demand as a guest master class
artist-teacher throughout Asia, Europe, Russia, and Australia. In the United
States, Kawin has served as a competition adjudicator for a variety of
organizations, including Bosendorfer USA, Lennox International Young Artists
(Texas), The Juilliard School (New York), Schubert Club (Minnesota) and the Van
Cliburn International Competition for Outstanding Amateurs (Texas). He has
served as a member of the adjudicating board for the National Alliance for
Excellence, an independent organization that awards merit-based scholarships in
the arts, and is currently a member of the board of the World Piano Pedagogy
Conference and the Leschetizky Association in New York.
Phillip Kawin is a Steinway artist. He has been a Manhattan School of Music
faculty member since 1989 and was elected Faculty Council President in 1996,
2005, and 2006.

Fall Festival

This, our 10th Anniversary Year, promises to be exciting! From a humble
beginning in 2001 with about 200 Festival student entries, we have come a long
way. We broke all records with last year's Festival with 339 student entries
and 31 teachers participating. This year we hope our Festival will be even
bigger! Please note the following important information:
-
Fall Festival is earlier than usual this year, Saturday October 11, 2008
at Northview High School.
-
Deadline for all paperwork and fees is Tuesday September 9
(date of our September general meeting).
-
Teachers must have paid local/national dues by September 9 to be eligible for
Festival.
-
Please attend the first meeting August 12 to receive your Handbook, which
contains all Festival forms and guidelines. Forms and guidelines may also be
found on our website at www.nfmta.com.
-
This year, in addition to performance awards, each judge will be giving a
special award for best performance of a Classical Period piece. Starting
this year, we have extended this special award to include not only piano solo
but also piano duets, vocal solos and vocal duets.
Fall Festival is a judged event that is open to students of all ages and
levels. It is a perfect first-time festival opportunity for young students.
Festival 2008 Co-Chairs are Sharleen Mancini, Jenny Sutton and Paula Wamsley.
