| Message from the President |
Welcome back to a year full of exciting events!
I hope that you have had a relaxing summer and that you have enjoyed the
not-so-hot weather we have had so far. I wish that it will stay this way and
that we can escape the heat this year. Many of you have been out traveling,
some to your home countries, other just to a different state. This summer I
decided to not go back to Sweden, but to instead enjoy a vacation here in the
US. What marvelous views there are to behold. My husband and I took a one week
cruise to Alaska and we were awestruck by the beauty of the nature and of the
incredible gift it is to be here. The absolute favorite part of the cruise
though was the string quartet that played every night in one of the lounges. We
stumbled upon them the first night after dinner and enjoyed a few tunes before
they were done for the evening. The next night we sought them out and continued
to do so until the cruise was over. One can wonder why this was so special?
Well, while sitting there I reflected on the gorgeous views we had seen and the
events that had taken place during the day all the while watching four
excellent string players in action, making music to my internal movie. The
musicians were from Romania and had been on the cruise for 5 months, this was
their last cruise before a 2 month vacation and then they were off on another
ship on the Mexican Rivera for a 4 month stay. As the week passed, we and many
others became regulars at their performances, nodding to each other as we found
"our" seats and sat down to be cleansed and revived by their music making. What
great pleasure that is, to sit there and be enveloped by music and have a
moment of pure bliss.
Although I cannot, at this point of my life, claim to be able to produce any
beautiful sounds on a string instrument, I was inspired to continue learning
more about music and about making this magic come alive for my students as
well. I encourage each one of you to at least attend one of our many fine
programs just because you can, not because you have to be there as a mandatory
participation to get your students into the next festival or competition. Come
support the program by your presence, and build a stronger and better teacher
out of you. This first meeting is all about you, and about our Handbook. We
will be passing out the 2009-2010 Handbook at this meeting and talk about the
upcoming programs as well as what we need to do within our group to reach out
and make others join in the music making. Lots of important information!!
I look forward to see you all at the next meeting at Steinway Galleries of
North Point Parkway. We meet for social at 9:30 a.m. and the business meeting
will start at 9:45 a.m.
Until then, stay cool and enjoy what little time is left of summer,
Maria
