| Message from the President |
Dear Members,
Last meeting was a delightful lecture-recital with Dr. Martha Thomas, sharing
her knowledge about Max Reger and his intermediate piano literature that could
be something new for you to teach. We heard some wonderful music being played
by Dr. Thomas and I left encouraged to look at some new music for me and my
students. If you missed it, it was a true gem.
For those of us who do Federation Festivals, it's a busy time, with fine
polishing that music to perfection. Before we know it we will also have done
the Local Auditions (3/14) so what could be more pertinent that the March
program. I look forward to see you this upcoming meeting, to hear Dr. Joseph
Rackers speak about the positive and negative aspects of Music Competitions. We
all know that most of our students will never become professional musicians but
music making is so much more than the 1st place winner or the outstanding
performer. It gives joy, love, discipline, focus, pride of accomplishment, the
experience of how hard something REALLY can be, because no one else can play
that piano for the student. We teach because we can't resist it. For some of
us, it is a full time profession, for others more of a part-time commitment.
But not for one moment do I believe that there is anyone that does this
continuously who is not fully committed to the music making, and to be that
special person that gives the joy of music to young or old. When you close your
"studio door" after a good day of teaching the energy is still buzzing, and on
those rare occasions when the day didn't go so well, there is still that
student who just brightened the day for us, as we strive to give them. We are
indeed lucky to have music in our lives.
The Board had a meeting this past week and looked at a couple of issues:
-
NFMTA Teacher Fundraising Recital
-
NFMTA Student Recital
-
Survey of Members
-
Fall Festival
-
Group Certification Effort
We are moving forward to find a date and location for a Teacher Recital for
fall. Those teachers that are interested in performing at this recital please
e-mail me. I encourage all members to consider participation. Yes, it takes
time to work up something to perform and maybe you don't feel "good enough",
but honestly, the music we would like to promote doesn't have to be the hardest
thing you ever played. Strive for something that gives great joy to the
audience, remember that we are dealing with an audience that is less
sophisticated than the trained ears down at Symphony Hall and in the eyes of
your student you are "THE STAR".
Fran Richards has volunteered to head up a Student Recital Committee, if you
would like to join in that effort please let either Fran or me know.
A Survey of the membership is in the works and we kindly ask that you take a
few minutes out of your day to answer the questions. The Survey will be coming
within a few weeks.
Fall Festival is on for the 17th of October as far as we know.
If you are interested in participating in the Certification effort, please
e-mail me and I will e-mail you for more information.
See you all the 10th of March,
Maria L. Kransmo
