Message from the President
Happy Fall,

I am happy to let you know that we will meet on Tuesday, November 11 at Steinway Piano Galleries in their new location (5950 North Point Parkway). Their recital hall will be furnished in time for our meeting and I am sure we will feel cozy there. It's a lovely room with a nice stage and when finished, will have two Steinway Grands on the stage. November's program will feature Kennesaw State University Professor of Piano Dr. David Watkins, lecturing about considerations in phrasing decisions.

At the meeting plan to sign up for your spot with Celebrate with Music, also plan to pick up CD's to support our fundraising effort and to spread music in the community. All proceeds will benefit our students. This is a great promotion of our chapter's involvement in the community.

At last month's joint meeting at England Piano, I was impressed by the talent and commitment of the Master Class students. Philip Kawin, Manhattan School of Music, acknowledged the technical acumen that the students showed. He then encouraged them to think about the importance of making music, not just learning to play the music fast. I am sure we all can relate to that. We want to be as technically accomplished as we possibly can, sometimes at the expense of the expressive quality of the music. I believe all students benefited from the Master Class, as did we teachers. It was also a wonderful opportunity to interact with fellow music teachers in the metro Atlanta area. If you couldn't make it, you missed something special. A warm "thank you" goes to Ruth Mantooth who arranged for our contribution to the food table. We also appreciate the work and effort of Raisa Parmentier who arranged for this Master Class to happen. Please think about something that you would like to see happen at next years programming. Suggestions are appreciated, since we are here to serve you!

On December 9th we plan to have a Holiday Breakfast at Field Good, a neighborhood gourmet cafe located at 11500 Webb Bridge Way. Please sign up at the November meeting and make your check out for $8.50. The breakfast will include coffee or tea, juice, fruit cup and a small danish as well as a wonderful quiche. We are planning for a fun filled morning with games and door prizes. Please come and enjoy your fellow teachers company as well as some seriously delicious food.

Happy music-making! I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting. Yes, I will continue to bring the Handbooks for those who have not received them yet.

Maria

Kathleen Cardwell Scholarship

The deadline for the Kathleen Cardwell Scholarship has been extended until November 15, 2008. The competition will take place at PianoWorks in Duluth on January 10, 2009 between 10 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Applications are in your Handbook and should be postmarked no later than November 15. I encourage you to invite your students and submit this application via mail to me. We would love to have a successful competition this year as well.

This is a great opportunity to perform before college auditions and be able to get some feeback at the same time.
